SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Brian Maienschein’s AB 2239 was signed by the Governor today. AB 2239 will add child endangerment and elder abuse to the list of crimes that prompt a 10-year ban on possessing a firearm.
Assemblymember Brian Maienschein released the following statement regarding the signing of AB 2239:
“We have all seen the ramifications of allowing firearms into the hands of the wrong individuals far too many times,” said Assemblymember Maienschein. “I am proud that the Governor signed my bill AB 2239, which will help California continue to advance common-sense protections for some of our most vulnerable, children and the elderly.”
Assemblymember Maienschein partnered with San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and City Attorney Mara W. Elliott on AB 2239.
City Attorney Mara W. Elliott released the following statement regarding the signing of AB 2239:
“The people who lose their gun privileges under this law are convicted abusers who preyed on our most vulnerable citizens – elders and children – often while living under the same roof with them,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said. “Many lives will be saved by removing firearms from these households. I thank the Mayor and City Council for making gun violence prevention a priority for our city, and Representative Maienschein for sponsoring this bill to protect Californians.”
Mayor Todd Gloria released the following statement regarding the signing of AB 2239:
“The City of San Diego is the proud sponsor of AB 2239, which protects communities by restricting gun access for those that commit senior and child abuse,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “We cannot stand idly by while our nation is plagued by gun violence. I’m grateful to Assemblymember Maienschein for carrying this bill, to City Attorney Mara Elliott for her partnership on this issue and to Gov. Gavin Newsom for his signature today.”
